Lucia Eames: 'Make the everyday sacred'

To engage with the work of Lucia Eames is to enter a world where the everyday is not overlooked, but elevated.

A world where meaning is found not in grand gestures, but in attentive observation, where a butterfly, a petal, or a carefully drawn line can hold an entire universe.

Guided by a poetic and deeply curious spirit, Lucia Eames developed a visual language rooted in nature, intuition, and a sense of wonder. Her work moves between the organic and the symbolic, shaping a universe of suns, birds, and abstract forms; elements that speak of presence, transformation, and joy.

As Maria Leach writes, her work invites us to “pause, return to the ground, and plant a place from which to begin again.”

Working primarily through drawing, her process was intuitive and open, allowing forms to emerge freely. The result is a body of work that feels both immediate and timeless.

Textiles also held an important place in her life. Introduced to weaving at an early age, Lucia maintained a sustained interest in fiber, pattern, and material exploration understanding the potential of materials to evolve and transform over time.

This sensibility finds a natural continuation in the Lucia Eames™ Rug Collection by nanimarquina. Developed in collaboration with the Eames Office, with the support of Form Portfolios, the collection is based on seven original artworks. The process began with a fundamental challenge: selecting the pieces that could be translated into textile without losing their essence.

Each design has been carefully interpreted through the most appropriate technique and material, not as a reproduction, but as a translation.
Butterflies, birds, suns, and organic forms run throughout the collection, gaining a tactile and spatial dimension through textile.

For Nani Marquina, the process was also deeply personal: “From the moment I discovered Lucia’s work, I felt a profound connection.”

The collection brings together a range of techniques such as hand tufted, hand knotted, hand loomed, and embroidery alongside new developments such as sculptural tufting and hand-braided, hand-stitched jute. Only natural fibers are used, including hand-spun Afghan wool, New Zealand wool, and jute, combined in varying densities to enhance texture, color, and depth.

The collection reflects nanimarquina’s ongoing commitment to responsible production, with a focus on durability, material integrity, and reduced environmental impact.

Beyond technique and process, however, something more essential emerges. A body of work that does not seek to impose, but to accompany.

As Maria Leach suggests, Lucia’s work reminds us that “nothing is too small to be celebrated”, that within the everyday lies the possibility of wonder.

An invitation to inhabit spaces differently. To make the everyday sacred.
